Taught by the transfiguration expert herself, Professor Minerva McGonagall. These Harry Potter Spells enables the caster to transform or transfigure one object to another. However, sometimes an object into an animal and vice versa. So The Tales of Beedle the Bard mentions that Professor McGonagall had learned and was able to carry bout the Animagus transformations as part of her research for transfiguration. Animagus transformation allows the caster to take up any animal form while retaining human intelligence.

Viktor Krum from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire uses partial transfiguration to get the head of a shark to enable him to breathe underwater.

02. Charm ; Harry Potter Spells

Charms are Harry Potter Spells that give an enhancement to an object without altering its nature. So a basic charm spell could make a teapot tapdance across the table. Since professor Flitwick conducts this lesson and it is his class we learn Wingardium Leviosa, Summoning, banishing and Aguamneti where the trio learns to turn vinegar into wine. Another famous charm we learn is Lumos where the wand emits a bright torchlight like a light.  Since the more popular charms are Aberto where the caster is able to summon an object towards them. Hermione’s Alahamora is not one to miss as she uses it to unlock the door guarding the three-headed dog in The Philosopher’s stone.

03. Jinx ; Harry Potter Spells

“I  know a jinx when I see one Hagrid, I’ve read all about them! You’ve got to keep eye contact, and Snape wasn’t blinking at all, I saw him” This how Hermione Granger tells Hagrid in the Philosophers stone. So Jinxes are a minor form of dark charms. They have negative irritating effects but considered amusing. So all Hogwarts students are taught jinxes in their Defense against the dark arts lessons conducted by Professor Snape and some of the popular jinxes would be Cantis, where objects and people are made to sing whereas Tarantallegra forces the victim to dance uncontrollably.

04. Hex ; Harry Potter Spells

A Hex has more severe effects than a jinx but not as severe as a curse. Hexes generally used as a defense mechanism just like Ginny Weasley used the Bat Bogey hex to escape Dolores Umbridge’s Inquisitorial squad. So Densaugeo is a hex that elongates the teeth of the victim in a hideous manner. Engorgio Skullus just as it sounds makes the head of the victim swell whereas Redactum Skullus shrinks the victim’s head. Also, J.K Rowling points out the there is a fine line between hexes and jinxes and they can use interchangeably according to the caliber and imagination of witches and wizards.

05. Curses

The unforgivable curses are the three most deadly Harry Potter Spells prevailing in the world of witchcraft and wizardry. Being the tools of the darkest form of magic, they rendered the caster prison sentence at Azkaban for their usage. Since Avada Kedavra the killing curse, Cruicio the spell that places the victim in a position of immense an unbearable torment and torture and  Imperio where the victim is placed under the control of the caster.  Using these unforgivable curses on another wizard or muggle without sufficient justification would send the caster to Azkaban. So Lord Voldemort made the usage of these curses legal under his regime with his army of Death eaters.

06. Counterspells

In Chamber of Secrets, Tom Riddle asks Harry how he escaped the Death curse that was placed on him. So it was concluded that Lilly’s act of sacrifice deflected the curse as it was a counter charm. Also the same could be applied to Harry’s broom being jinxed/hexed by Quirrel during a Quidditch match where Snape was staring Harry muttering a counter curse to save his life. Finite Incantatem is an overall protective spell that acts as a shield to general hexes and jinxes.

07. Healing spells

“He hurried over to Ron, bent down, tapped on Ron’s leg with his wand and muttered Ferula. Bandages spun up Ron’s leg, strapping it tightly to a splint”. Remus Lupin using a healing spell on Ron. A healing spell is a branch in magic whereby having characteristics to improve the physical condition of a living object. Some of the famous healing spells would be  Brackium Emendo which renders the caster to be able to heal bones and bone fractures, Episkey which is used to treat mild to moderate injuries and etc.. Of course not when Professor Quirrell tried to heal Harry’s hand.

As Potterheads, I’m sure each and every one of you has tried at least one of these Harry Potter spells using a self-made wand. If you have you are not alone! All Potterheads unite!
